cottage to family house transformation , by kirriemuir

the client wished to substatially enlarge an existing three bedroom traditional stone built cottage to accomodate a growing family.

the design for the enlarged cottage more than doubled the floor area of the existing cottage; creating a new lounge wing, open plan kitchen and dining spaces both lit with new rooflights and a new master bedroom suite with 'jack and jill' shower room

the existing house and the two new cottage wings are linked with side lit corridors with open enclosed garden lightwells in the middle of the house plan - the 'tardis' like house still looks like a grouping of traditiona  cottages from all sides, with only the new fixed rooflights hinting at a different form internally

planning approval for the  enlargement of the property was achieved after the creation of a series of photmontage images illustrating how the new structure would look in full context to the same images of the existing building

the same palette of stonework walls, slate roofs and locally fabricated timber windows helps the new building blend almost seamlessly into the rural Angus landscape.
